CASA AZUL (MEXICO CITY, MEXICO)

“I paint my own reality.
The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to,
and I paint whatever passes through my head
without any other consideration.”
- Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo had a colorful and interesting life. If you haven't read her biography or watched the movie starring Salma Hayek, please do. Frida Kahlo is a renowned Mexican painter. Painting herself is the subject she knew best. Early in her childhood, she was severely injured because of a bus accident. While she was bed-ridden and recovering, she began to paint.

She married Diego Rivera, a well-known Mexican muralist. His works can be seen all over Mexico City (see his murals here). As the sign reads (above), "Frida and Diego lived in this house from 1929-1954". Their marriage was a tumultuous one and they got divorced.

No doubt, the house reflects the colorful life Frida had. She is a feminist, a brave activist, and a woman who is true to herself. Her home clearly reflected her persona. As you meander around the rooms, the kitchen, her paint studio - there is a lot of lively pieces that will attract your eye. The house is gleaming with character that shows her personality.

While showcasing her artwork abroad, she is a champion of showing the Western Culture, her Mexican ancestry.
The house, now a museum, displays all of her life's work. The rooms are occupied with her well-known self-portraits and her distinctive unibrow.

The room where she painted was particularly interesting.

Casa Azul is situated in a quiet but nice neighborhood in Mexico City.  We took a taxi to get here. While in Mexico City, include Casa Azul on your places to visit. Was it worth it yes? Definitely and most especially if you love art. Frida Kahlo has a lust for life and Casa Azul will show you how vibrant her life was.

"Traveling is soul-smashingly beautiful.
It will open up your life."
Picture
Coined as the City of the Gods, or also known as Teotihuacan. About 2 hours away from Mexico City, this mysterious but enchanting place will capture your interest. The Aztec built this pre-Hispanic empire and the two iconic pyramids (Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon) is astonishing. The architecture of the pyramids are striking, despite using rudimentary tools. To get to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun, ypu have to climb 248 steps. It is also said to be second largest pyramid in the world, next to Giza Pyramid in Cairo, Egypt. The Avenue of the Dead connects the two pyramids together.

Here are some tips before and while visiting Teotihuacan:

  • Best time to go?  We went during Spring (March-April) and the weather was just fabulous - not to hot while walking around and not to chilly. As always, always check the weather conditions before leaving for your vacation.
  • Should you rent a car? Should you use public transportation to get here? Our recommendation is to book a tour or a private driver since the tours are already budget friendly and usually the entrance fee is already included on the fee. We do not advise renting a car in Mexico City.
  • If you have a full day to explore, feel free to visit the other museum situated in the area.
  • Avoid the crowd on Sundays, since locals can visit the site for free during this day.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, umbrella, comfortable shoes and water to drink.

Seeing the pyramids is definitely worth the day trip and a must-see while vacationing in Mexico City. After all, this ancient site will definitely awaken your senses. As a matter of fact, Teotihuacan is a thousand years older than Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat. Old age history, combined with a picturesque landscape, can you really ask for more?
